In the last week, the House of Representatives had approved a bill that would speed up the deployment of self-driving vehicles. However, the bill applies only to vehicles under 10,000 pounds.
A bill concerning the deployment of commercial self-driving trucks is currently under consideration by the Senate. Navistar, a truck manufacturing company has been urging the Senate panel to include commercial trucks in the legislation for self-driving vehicles.
Members of the trucking industry are contemplating the impact that self-driving trucks could have on the 3.5 million drivers in the industry. Despite such concerns, the American Trucking Association (ATA) has encouraged the use of self-driving trucks. Both ATA and Navistar believe that the impact of self-driving trucks on drivers will be gradual and nowhere in the near future and also that a large-scale displacement is not likely to happen.
Meanwhile, the Teamsters' Union, a trade group, is actively opposing any legislation to deploy commercial self-driving trucks. Transportation secretary Elaine Chao has also expressed concerns about how jobs can be affected.
