Even though the deadline for the implementation of the electronic logging device (ELD) mandate is less than 12 weeks away, it seems that small trucking companies, owner-operators, agricultural trucking groups have decided to repeat their demands for a delay of the mandate. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association led a coalition of 31 organizations to demand the bill introduced by House Representative Babin to be passed. The bill delays the implementation of the mandate by two years. They are seeking to delay the mandate by appealing to either the Congress and President Trump or the U.S. Dept. of Transportation (DOT). As done previously, the OOIDA stated the discrepancies in the specifications of the ELD mandate and demanded that the bill be delayed until these were addressed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
The Agricultural Retailers Association (ARA) requested the Trump administration to delay the mandate since it felt that many agricultural groups and businesses were not fully prepared to comply with the upcoming mandate. They also expressed concerns about the costs of the ELDs saying that the initial investments are too high.
