FedEx Express Driver Named National Grand Champion

A Massachusetts driver for FedEx Express took home the title of Bendix Grand Champion this weekend from the American Trucking Associations’ 2017 National Truck Driving Championships in Orlando, Florida.
Roland Bolduc’s driving accuracy and knowledge of truck safety surpassed the more than 420 other state champion professional truck drivers competing in all vehicle classes last week.

‘88-Mike’ back in victory lane in Bandit Racing Series

Mike “88-Mike” Morgan and his black Mack are back in victory lane following the most recent Bandit Racing Series race.
Morgan, an OOIDA member from Wartrace, Tenn., took the checkered flag in the 25-lap A-Main Race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Easley, S.C., on June 10. The win is his first of the season. Starting out in sixth, Morgan got a good jump during a restart, and led for the final 11 laps.

J.D. Smith driver wins Toronto trucking competition

BRAMPTON, Ont. — Bruce Leonard of J.D. Smith Transport was named grand champion at the Toronto Regional Truck Driving Championships (TRTDC) May 27.
Leonard topped the hotly contested tandem-tandem category. The grand champion award is given to the driver who scores the highest point margin above the average in his or her category. About 33 drivers took part in the driving championships, held at the Powerade Centre in Brampton, Ont.

Winners announced for 2017 California Truck Driving Championships

May 20-21, 2017, more than 200 California truck drivers participated in the California Trucking Association’s (CTA) 69th Annual Northern California Regional Competition and the State Finals of the Truck Driving Championships. The event was held at the McClellan Business Park in Sacramento.
“CTA is proud to sponsor this event, which highlights the hard work of truckers throughout the state. This event is recognized as one of the top driver-recognition programs and celebrates our industry’s commitment to safety,” said Shawn Yadon, CTA’s CEO. “Because contestants must have a clean record in order to participate, this event inspires thousands of drivers to operate accident-free, which keeps California roads safe.”

I first ran across the idea of a “Gig Economy” a couple of weeks ago and immediately grasped its meaning. There’s no official definition, but in broad terms, it characterizes a labor market in which people seek out short-term freelance work in addition to, or as opposed to, employment in the conventional sense.
This new concept is reflected in last week's launch by Uber of its long-anticipated Uber Freight service and app, which basically allows owner-operators to bypass traditional freight brokers and locate and contract loads for themselves. It’s an interesting concept from the company that can arguably be called the tech enabler for this new Gig Economy.

OOIDA Member Bill Rethwisch of Tomah, Wis., captured Best of Show honors with his 2016 Peterbilt 389 at the 35th Annual Shell Rotella SuperRigs competition held May 18-20 at Exchange Center at Expo Square in Tulsa, Okla. He was awarded $10,000 from Shell Rotella and $5,000 from MAC Trailer. Rethwisch also won for Best Interior and Best Engine.
“My heart was coming out of my chest; I didn’t think we had it,” said Rethwisch who also took Best of Show in 2014 and 2015. “This is the third time in four years and four times in the (SuperRigs) calendar out of four tries. I’m ecstatic right now. I’m so proud I don’t even know which way to think.”

The 29th annual Run For The Wall roared past OOIDA headquarters Monday morning en route to Washington, D.C., for the annual Rolling Thunder parade on Memorial Day Weekend.
Nearly 1,000 bikers departed from Ontario, Calif., on Wednesday, May 17, with plans to arrive at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The riders plan to arrive in Washington, D.C., on Friday, May 26.
